About Michael:

It's spring 2003. I am wandering though an art faire up in Montclair. Usually I find these type of events somewhat mundane, but not today. Two photographers are displaying digital photos printed on a material that appears to be canvas. This I find riveting. So much so that a revelation ensues. My tought is "I can do this". It is then, a long smoldering urge to pursue a career as an artist re-ignites.

So, I am thinking I have found a media that I understand. An avenue where I can create. Not long after I purchased a Nikon D100 and began a quest to create interesting photographs. For the last 5 years I have worked to hone my photography skills while producing large prints from unique digital photographs.

We are inundated by average or redundant photography on the web, in print and in advertisements daily. I believe that makes it hard to distinguish fine art from the ordinary. I don't want this to happen with my work. I try to be sure my work is simple, unique and very interesting before it gets out of the studio. And I like to let my eye and the camera do the all of the work. I do little to no tweaking with software. So what I produce is mostly what I see.

Coursework in photography at UC Berkeley and CCA proved to be extremely helpful in getting my feet off the ground. The Rust Portfolio and MILK 2007 would not have come about without it.
